Cemfree and Bouygues UK team up for Ultra-Low Carbon Concrete Trial

Cemfree, part of David Ball Group Ltd, has undertaken a series of successful in-situ trials over this year, the most recent taking place in September with Bouygues UK at the Gascoigne Estate in Barking, East London.

After an initial meeting this summer, it was clear that Bouygues UK Project Manager, Jean-Marie Perret, was keen to investigate the sustainability potential of Cemfree, conscious of the massive carbon saving that is achievable with this zero-cement concrete.

The Gascoigne Estate was first built in the 1960s and is now the subject of a huge redevelopment scheme to bring it into the 21st century, with Bouygues UK appointed as contractor for the first phase of works. In the spirit of innovation and sustainable construction, Bouygues UK seized the opportunity to carry out a full scale on-site evaluation of Cemfree concrete, with ready mix producer Express Concrete stepping in to supply the material from their plant at Barking. The trial went exceptionally well and teaming Cemfree with Bouygues UK further down the line on future projects looks hopeful.

James Giles, Cemfree Business Development Manager, is thrilled with the collaboration, saying, “It’s fabulous to see forward-thinking companies such as Bouygues UK embracing new technologies, daring to step outside the box of traditional materials & techniques and looking to the future and the possibilities that Cemfree presents to the construction industry.”

Bouygues UK’s Jean-Marie Perret, leading the Cemfree trials for the Gascoigne Estate, says, “We are always looking for new ways to innovate, and the carbon-saving potential of Cemfree is considerable. Initial trials have been very positive and we will continue to explore its potential as a sustainable alternative to traditional concrete – a hugely exciting possibility.”
